SAGAS - The Southern Area Group of Astronomical Societies
The aim of SAGAS is to unite astronomical societies in the Southern Area of England, UK so that we can help each other, share ideas and observations, give our society members a better service and get more out of our hobby. There are no formal boundaries to the SAGAS area , although roughly it is South of the Thames and the M4 until Swindon and then down through Salisbury to the coast. There is no subscription at present. Each society making an equal contribution to cover costs at each meeting. Here are just eight reasons why your society should be in SAGAS:- 1. By joining you can get help on running your society (for newer ones), help with speakers and help with insurance issues and legal requirements. 2. Social benefits:- Getting to know others from different areas. Sharing ideas. 3. Help and advice on the purchase and performance of telescopes. 4. Advertising: Details of membership secretary to appear on web site and passing details to others of special meetings which could attract members from other societies. The SAGAS web site has a map showing where member societies are located so prospective members can locate their local societies. 5 Practicable joint observing sessions. Help with running public observing sessions. 6. An annual 'Open meeting' to which all members of all societies are invited. This takes the form of a series of lectures and is hosted by a different society each year. 7. Closer links with the national Federation of Astronomical Societies, but there is no requirement for societies who are not FAS members at present to join to get SAGAS membership. 8. Knowing what other societies in your area are doing. This information will be published on the SAGAS web site www.sagas.org.uk or in the Newsletter which is distributed electronically in pdf format. We sincerely hope that your society will decide to join us . We would welcome you. .
